Coach Lamb Announces Timeline for the Reinstatement of College Football
August 31, 2011
With Mercer returning to the college gridiron in the fall of 2013, head coach Bobby Lamb and his staff have been busy behind the scenes laying the necessary groundwork to build a program from scratch. In addition to securing equipment, a playing field, a schedule, office space and locker room space, the staff has among its top priorities bringing in the student-athletes who will compose the roster of Mercer’s first team in 70 years.
Currently, the staff is travelling extensively in scouting and recruiting outstanding students who will participate in Mercer’s Division I, non-scholarship program. The first signing class will be announced in February 2012. The coaching staff will also provide an opportunity for current Mercer students to make the team by having open tryouts this spring.
In the fall of 2012, the program advances to the next stage when the first practices will begin for the young squad composed of that first freshman class and the walk-ons who make the team. The Bears will practice regularly throughout the fall, although not playing an official game.
A second signing class will be announced in February 2013 to be followed by the team’s first spring practice.
Then, the countdown will begin until Mercer’s first game in the fall of 2013. The opponent for that first game will be announced in the coming months, according to coach Lamb.
